Elon Musk said he has no interest in releasing monthly Tesla sales figures. Why? Because “media tends to read all sorts of nonsense into the deliveries.” Well, apparently some in the media will read all sorts of nonsense into his decision to stick with quarterly figures.
The Daily Kanban has published a piece in which in it compares worldwide Model S registrations collated by JATO – an auto industry information and consulting firm – with sales figures Tesla has released, found a 4,000 vehicle discrepancy, and basically calls Elon Musk a big fat liar. Glancing at the JATO data, which consists of 2014 registrations, we can’t help but notice it also contains mention of 53 Fisker Karmas and a number of other suspect vehicles, leading us to believe that this may not be the most accurate way of estimating vehicle deliveries by Tesla.
But whatever, it really just comes down to this. Would Elon risk the wrath of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and fib about sales? Would it have 4,000 cars stashed somewhere that it couldn’t sell, yet make customers wait for weeks for a delivery? It seems unlikely.
We’d like to tell the Kanban people what we think of their article and question the virtuousness of their mothers, but unfortunately they don’t allow the public to comment on their site. We, however, do. So, if you have something to say on this subject, or any other, let her rip! (Just leave our mothers out of it, if you would be so kind.)
